Innovation and transmedia narrative in television documentaries for the dissemination of cultural heritage: the case of the Roman Engineering series

Abstract

Documentary is a genre what has been developing as new techniques have been arising, and television documentary –as adaptation of the cinematographic format, but with the own features of television formats- has been able to incorporate all these new resources, to innovate, and to develop thanks to the possibilities offered by the Internet, new content proposals based on transmediality and public participation. In this context, new documentary formats such as the webdoc are emerging. The technological development also allows for the incorporation of new techniques of animation and 3D recreation, as well as resources such as virtual and augmented reality, which allow the audience to visualise the facts in a much more realistic way. These instruments are especially useful in the case of documentaries of scientific and cultural dissemination, by making easier the understanding of the contents exposed. This text analyses the application of innovation and transmedia narrative in the television documentary of cultural dissemination, with the incorporation of 3D recreation techniques, 360º video, virtual and augmented reality, through the study of a particular case: documentary series "Roman Engineering", broadcast on La 2 of TVE.
