Abstract

The number of ways in which we use and rely on our mobile devices today is fascinating. There is no great reflection on the technological dependence on mobile devices and communication in everyday life. This is strikingly different from the ten years before the advent of contemporary smartphones with touch screens. Access to news is easier than ever, even with the abundance of free news disseminated through ubiquitous digital platforms and mobile devices. The connection between mobile devices and news reporting has become one of the most important developments in journalism, although research on the subject is still scarce. Beginning with a discussion of the origins and current role of mobile journalism, this article concludes by addressing some specific research questions related to the production, distribution and consumption of mobile news. There is a need to develop a better cross-cultural and interdisciplinary understanding of the connection between mobile devices and journalism through the use of diverse sets of methods.
