Abstract

Understanding the daily reality of immigrants from the point of view of the media and the socio-cultural practices that surround them represents a priority object of study for a growing number of scholars. In this respect, together with the analysis of the media treatment of immigration (Igartua, Cheng and Múñiz, 2005), the creation of media by and for immigrants requires particular attention, as a communicative and cultural offer that favours integration processes and the development of identities (Howley, 2005; Jankowski and Prehn, 2002; Matsaganis, Katz, and Ball-Rokeach, 2011). In order to contribute to the current theoretical reflection on the integrative role of mass communication from the point of view of particular identity and linguistic contexts, this article offers partial results of a broader investigation focused on the development of media for the Latino collective in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC). Thus, in addition to analysing and describing the specific experience of Candela radio, this paper reviews the difficulties involved in managing multiculturalism in societies such as the Basque society, which is multifaceted and has strong and deep-rooted traditions, values and cultures (Gershon, 1995; Zallo and Ayuso, 2009), largely linked to the use of its own language, in this case, the Basque language.
