Documentation against disarticulation. Is the future of the present in the past of the communication academic field in Latin America?

This essay suggests that if the development foreseen in the 1970s for documentation activities and systems as a factor of national and international structural articulation for the academic field of communication had been continued, reinforced, and better adapted to the changing conditions of the Latin-American region, the growing disarticulation that has characterized this field could be better understood and countered. In the sense of McHale's (1969) proposal, that “the future of the past is in the future; the future of the present is in the past; the future of the future is in the present”, we could understand the past more critically for knowing what to expect or what future is more viable to bet on in the present, as is stated on the call for papers for this special issue of the RAE-IC (“The future of the field: past, present and future of communication research in Ibero-America") and its declared objective of incorporating proposals that, "from a critical, provocative and challenging perspective" examine and problematize practices and patterns "that are taken for granted".
