Abstract

This article aims to understand and discuss the role ok sports journalism in the history and development of women's football in Brazil, a space in which gender inequalities are present, mobilizing the concept of mediatization, based on the principle that the media is a constituent of culture itself, and sport, as a sociocultural phenomenon, starts to be structured in a mediatic way. To study this scenario, historical records of the sports press between the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s were selected. The proposal is an analysis focused on mediatized society. It was observed that newspapers and magazines went through and portrayed periods of prohibition, criminalization, sexualization, objectification and feminization, and the changes that occurred over time in the media enabled new spaces of newsworthiness and mediatization of women's football.
