Abstract

This article discusses the theoretical, methodological, and epistemological basis responsible for structuring the field of Public Communication within Communication Studies in Brazil. The object of this analysis is the references used by researchers in Brazilian journals between 2013 and 2022 when they published about this topic. The empirical design considers 50 articles about Public Communication in seven national journals (E-Compós, Intercom, Organicom, Reciis, E-Legis, Compolitica, and Matrizes) and 1.310 references are used in this sample. The article analyzes (a) the citation networks, including the type of citation and authors; (b) the highlights about the type of citation and authors; (c) the temporal distribution of the references; and (d) the origin and type of materials mentioned. The results indicate a spread of citations with few central materials, which is a challenge for the consolidation of the field. It is also noted that articles and books are the main type of reference, with a concentration of materials from the last 10 years, and that national sources are prioritized.
