Automated fact-checking under human surveillance: AI implementation in the case of Newtral

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has been progressively introduced into newsrooms since the early years of the 2010s, can serve as a potent tool to combat disinformation in the current scenario of a crisis of trust in traditional journalism and the rampant spread of hoaxes. This research paper delves into the AI tools that have been implemented in Newtral, a leading verification media outlet in Spain, with the aim to streamline the workflow in the newsroom and expedite the process of publishing disinformation. Through semi-structured interviews conducted with four professionals (comprising three from the technology team and one editor), it is discovered that AI projects significantly facilitate the work of journalists and foster positive discussions and synergies between engineers and information professionals. AI is employed to detect relevant topics and verifiable facts, transcribe audio content to text, and monitor social media posts. To circumvent algorithmic errors, human-in-the-loop techniques are employed to ensure that no content that has been manipulated by AI is published without undergoing human review.

Author Biographies

  • Borja Quiles Morán, Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH)

    Borja Quiles Morán is a predoctoral researcher in journalism at the University Miguel Hernández. He has a degree in Journalism from the same university (2022) and a Master in New Journalism, Political Communication and Knowledge Society from the University of Valencia (2023). He has participated in the research projects “JoIn Demos”, an international comparative study on innovation in journalism in five European countries (Spain, Germany, Austria, United Kingdom and Switzerland), and in the project “IBERIFIER”, an observatory of digital media in Spain and Portugal. In the academic year 2021-2022 he received a collaboration grant from the Ministry of Education to carry out research tasks on the use of Artificial Intelligence. He has received the Extraordinary Undergraduate and Master's Degree Award and an Academic Excellence Student Award (academic year 2018-2019). His research focuses are computational journalism and AI, disinformation and fact-checking.

  • Félix Arias Robles, Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH)

    Félix Arias Robles is a Professor, Vice Dean of the Degree in Journalism, and Deputy Director of the Master's in Innovation in Journalism at Miguel Hernández University (UMH), where he coordinates courses in Technology, New Narratives and Data Journalism. His current research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence, data journalism, and local information. He has published in journals such as Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, Communication & Society, El Profesional de la Información, and The Journal of Media Innovations. He has been a visiting researcher at JournalismAI, a think tank at the London School of Economics (LSE), the School of Journalism at the University of Sheffield, and the University of Leeds (United Kingdom). He has also trained journalists in newsrooms such as La Voz de Galicia, Vocento, and Onda Regional. Additionally, he coordinates the projects periodistasdedatos.com and localdatalab.umh.es.
